“The original word…

…was an hallucination circling the light of meaning.” ~ Bruno Schulz

Polish writer Bruno Schulz gave us a wonder — his book The Street of Crocodiles. He also gave us a meditation on the metaphysics of language, that eerie generator of significance:

The Mythologization of Reality

  1. I am still in the process of becoming acquainted with Bruno Schulz, but even a passing friendship with his works will reward the reader. It seems Schulz himself was no stranger to the writings of Philo of Alexandria and the neo-Platonists. Reading this essay of Schulz’s sent me off to look back at Philo…http://www.earlyjewishwritings.com/text/philo/book17.html ..and then I returned to the magic of Schulz’s text. I would go as far as to say that Schulz was a 20th-century Philo. “…reality is but a shadow of the word.” (Schulz)

Truly, I could attempt essay after essay, without approaching the quality of what Schulz was able to express in this short “meditation”, The Mythologization of Reality.

“Learning is by nature curiosity… prying into everything, reluctant to leave anything, material or immaterial, unexplained.” (Philo of Alexandria)
